iTOXControl

Toxicity Monitoring with Luminiscence Bacteria

The iTOXcontrol is a toxicity monitor and is ideally used to give additional information on water quality. This completely automated Biomonitoring System uses freshly cultivated light emitting bacteria (Vibrio fischeri) as a biological sensor. The luminescence is measured before and after exposure to calculate the inhibition in %.

The luminescent bacteria test is an automated version of the ISO 11348 allowing continuous monitoring of rivers, drinking water production or wastewater treatment plants. The luminescent bacteria, used in the TOXcontrol BioMonitor, have been successfully used for a variety of environmental, process monitoring and educational applications.

iTOXcontrol Technology

The use of living organisms is the only reliable way to measure the potential biological impact (toxicity) of a water sample. The TOXcontrol combines the advantages of whole organism toxicity testing and instrumental precision. This completely automated system uses freshly cultivated light emitting bacteria (Vibrio fischeri NRRL B-11177) as a biological sensor. The luminescence is measured before and after exposition to calculate the inhibition in percent. The more toxic the sample, the greater the percent light loss from the test suspension of luminescent bacteria.

The use of a luminescent bacteria test system has been validated by industrial, academic, and governmental testing laboratories.
